Mary is back at St. Mike's! I got a call this week from Mary Moreno-Richardson, once parishioner at St. Mike's. She is town and has graciously agreed to speak with us about her work on immigration, human trafficking and girls' empowerment issues. Hope to see you at 10am on Sunday the 8th as we keep the feast....Peace, Nicole+
More on Mary...
The Rev. Canon Mary Moreno-Richardson is the Coordinator for Hispanic Ministry in the Diocese of San Diego. She is also the director of the Guadalupe Art Program and was the first Latina priest ordained in the Diocese of San Diego.
Prior to moving to San Diego, Mary served at the cathedral center in Los Angeles, and served as Senior Episcopal Chaplain at the Central Juvenile Detention Facility in East Los Angeles. Her time in Los Angeles was preceded by work in Santa Barbara County, where she taught Confident Parenting classes to Spanish-speaking parents for the Santa Barbara County Schools and was the Latino Coordinator for the Multicultural Community Partnership of Santa Barbara County. She also has worked as a CASA (court appointed special advocate) and she created a youth drug/alcohol prevention program for the County of Santa Barbara. It was during her time in Santa Barbara that Mary attended St. Michael’s and was received into the Episcopal Church!
Mary (along with Nicole) serves the Committee on the Status of Women of the Episcopal Church, where she focuses on the problem of Human Trafficking. Through the Guadalupe Art Program, she is co-producing with Brooke Adams and Jamie Donnelly national Public Service Announcements that educate the public on the issue of trafficking and also, offer in diverse languages, an emergency number for victims to call for help.
